A video circulating on social media claims that Mike Oquaye Jr., the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Parliamentary Candidate for the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency, has conceded defeat following the December 7, 2024, elections.
The video captioned “Mike Oquaye concedes, after plenty talks” was shared on TikTok and shows Mike Oquaye appealing to his supporters to accept the outcome of the recent election without reacting out of anger.
The Dome-Kwabenya parliamentary seat was contested by Elikplim Akurugu of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and Mike Oquaye of the NPP.
Fact-Check Ghana has analysed the video and found the video to be old, making the claim false.
A Google search for a concession speech by Mike Oquaye Jr. video led to identical videos in news reports by GhanaWeb TV and ChannelOne TV from 2020. The reports covered the NPP primaries, a contest between Mike Oquaye Jr. and Sarah Adwoa Safo to determine the party’s parliamentary candidate for the 2020 elections. In the related videos, Mike Oquaye Jr. was seen wearing the same outfit and face mask as in the circulating video. Additionally, the video was widely shared on social media in 2020.
The use of nose masks by many people in the video further indicates that it was recorded during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 when mask-wearing was mandatory in public spaces.
The NPP parliamentary candidate for Dome-Kwabenya has challenged the results of the 2024 parliamentary election, claiming the declaration of his opponent as the winner is illegal due to the burning of some ballot papers. He has not accepted defeat, and no recent video exists of him doing so.
Therefore, the claim that Mike Oquaye Jr. conceded defeat in the 2024 elections is false. The video is from 2020 and pertains to the NPP primaries, not the 2024 general elections.
